A part from the mountain gorillas, Volcanoes is home to golden monkeys, grey-cheeked mangabeys and black and white colobus monkeys etc. There are also many bird species living in the lush and pristine Volcanoes National Park. These also encompass the Albertine endemics. Among the birds to see while tracking gorillas are the Rwenzori turaco. Other birds to sight while tracking are dusky crimson-wing, handsome francolin and Strange weaver etc.
Detailed itinerary
Day 1: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park
Anywhere in Kigali City, you will be picked up by our driver. A transfer to Volcanoes National Park in the northwest of Rwanda will follow. This journey covers only 115 kilomters and during the scenic drive you will have enroute lunch. Arrive at your lodge and check in. Spend the reminder of your day relaxing and acclimatizing to the fresh conditions of the forest. Have dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 2: Gorilla trekking in the forest
Early morning breakfast will be availed as soon as you wake up. Drive to the Volcanoes National Park headquarters to start a gorilla trekking tour. First is the much needed short briefing. Ranger guides organize this to make sure you are equipped with the trekking rules and regulations for your safety and the gorillas’. The guides will also lead you into the dense forest looking for a habituated gorilla family.
Their location is what will determine how long you will be in the forest. This ranges from 2 to 6 hours or slightly more. But, once you find the gorillas, it is 1 hour that is offered to observe them in their natural homes. After seeing them you will return for debriefing at the place where you started. Your driver will meet you and drive you back to your lodge. Relax for the rest of the day. Have dinner and overnight stay.
Day 3: Departure to Kigali. End of tour
As soon as you wake up, grab some breakfast before checking out of the lodge. Check out and start driving back to Kigali city. You will reach Kigali at the end of your 115 kilometer journey. Enroute lunch will be offered in Kigali and then you will be drop you at your point of convenience.
